I began my martial arts training in 1980. Initially, I studied Tae Kwon Do in Madison, Wisconsin and earned my first degree black belt in that art in 1985. I then continued to study and train in Tae Kwon Do and also started training in Doce Pares Escrima through Grand Master Tom Sipin with Four Winds Martial Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1989, I moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where I trained on and off in a variety of martial arts until 2006 when I arrived at MKG-Minnetonka.
When you study and train in the martial arts, they become part of you. The skills you acquire, the knowledge you gain, and the ways in which you grow are very personal and no one can take those things away from you. For me, my Tae Kwon Do training has given me an excellent base from which to study other martial arts. It has allowed me to follow the advice of Guro Dan Inosanto to incorporate techniques and methods from other styles that work for me and to "make them my own." MKG West has been a great environment in which to do this.
Also, having good friends to train with and with whom to share your martial arts experiences can be the difference between simply "working out" and truly "studying/learning the martial arts." At MKG West you have the opportunity to work out, learn the martial arts, and much more. And although we train hard, we always try to have fun!
